Another year is about to come to a close and the Southern Knights of Central Kentucky is still going strong.  It all began eighteen years ago in July of 1989 in a small living room in Scott County with Bob Metcalf, Jim Mulcahy and Bob Sexton.  They put the word out and held the club's first meeting at the local Dairy Freeze in Georgetown.  The news soon spread that there was a new club in town and membership picked up.  In fact, due to the number of new members, the meetings were moved to a larger place - Frisch's Restaurant.  By the middle of 1991, membership had made it necessary to move again.  This time it was the Golden Coral Steak House.  By 1993, with a staggering 123 families as members, relocation was necessary once again.  Today, meetings are held in the basement of the Fire Station on Airport Road and is open to anyone with an interest in finding out more about the club. (Check out Meetings page on this site).  Important notice about meetings:  Beginning with the March 2, 2008 date, all meetings will be held at the Golden Corral in Georgetown in their meeting.

The club's first cruise was held in July of 1990 at the local McDonalds with 58 cars in attendance.  The cruise soon outgrew McDonalds (with over 100 cars at each cruise) and another site was needed.  The City of Georgetown offered to let Main Street be the new fun site for several years.  Not to "overstay our welcome" the cruises were alternated between Main Street and other locations including Kohl's.  Beginning in 2008, all cruises will be held at Kohl's Department Store parking lot.  (See Calendar page on this site for exact dates).

All along the Southern Knights' had a dream to do whatever possible (even in small ways) to help kids and their families.  The search was on for an organization that would best suit that dream.  The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass fit like the perfect glove and a "marriage in heaven" was made.  Between 1991 and 2007, a whopping $125,000.00 has been donated to the House from the club's activities.  Other recipients have included the Scott County Toys for Tots, Scott County Amateur Radio Service (SCARS), individual children and adults with life-threatening illnesses, flood and fire victims in Rockcastle County, American Heart Association, National Diabetes Foundation, Franklin County Coats for Kids, Alzheimer's Association, The American Relief Fund, The Ashley Lyons Memorial Garden Fund and families that just need a helping hand in times of despair.

The club's first car show was held in June of 1990 at the Cardome Center in Georgetown with 204 registered participants.  Awards in 30 classes plus 10 specialty were presented.  This went over so well that it became an annual event for years.

In 1995, the Southern Knights was contacted by Cardinal Hill Hospital to assist with an annual car show by them and the Greasers Car Club.  This show was held at Ft. Boonesborough State Park yearly and was known as The Greasers Car Show.  For whatever reasons, they felt they no longer could continue and stepped back.  In 1996, something unfortunate happened.  Cardinal Hill Hospital dropped the show just seven weeks before the gates were to open.  Since the show was all about helping kids, what could the Southern Knights do but step up to the plate and make sure the show went on.  With all throttles at full speed, the show did go on and gates were open on time.  At that time, the Southern Knights had no backing for the show and only a few hand-out items were donated from Valvoline.  Something must have worked because the Southern Knights just recently hosted their 12th Boonesborough Boogie Nationals.  Yes, with all the hard work and coverage by national magazines, the club had achieved the status of a national event.  With this additional accomplishment, a major decision had to be made.  Do we host two major car shows a year - one at Boonesborough and/or one at the Cardome Center?  After much soul-searching and discussion, the Southern Knights decided to cancel the show at the Cardome Center and focus all attention on the Boonesborough Boogie Nationals.   It is now on the list of being one of the best and biggest in Kentucky.
